I love books. I lose track of the universe upon clearing the thresholds of libraries or booksellers. Growing up, I aspired to have a reading corner like my Uncle Gaëtan, complete with a broken-in chair, reading light, and refreshment table. However, my nomadic tendencies and lack of private real estate have hindered my ability to amass a private library. In an effort to resume flexing my thinking muscle, I’ve embraced electronic reading.

Paper or Plastic?
My undergraduate degree is in English with scope covering several genres: creative writing, feminist theory, film and media studies, and fiction analysis. This resulted in a rather varied collection of books with absolutely no resale value at the local book stores as they were not only course, but instructor specific. Whenever I looked at my growing collection of tomes, it was always with confliction. Without a home of my own, moving my library always brought a series of difficult decisions. Moreso, when there was a distinct lack of elevator involved.

Bibliophiles and packrats would best understand my dilemma. Books are an investment, and as they are related to my degree, proof that I have invested the time and energy in my education. The more I have, the more accomplished I feel. Throwing them away would be a waste, and giving them away is simply too hard. Reselling them is an option, but I doubt I would come remotely close to breaking even. BookCrossing sounded like a good idea, but I would have to pay for people to take my books, and possibly never see them again.

On the flipside, they simply collect dust and take up space on my book shelves in my small apartment, or worse they get musty or ruined in storage. Schlepping them from Point A to Point B is never fun, and often requires multiple trips (or friends who do not mind back breaking lifting). Unread items become daily reminders of the continuously evolving reading list I am horribly neglecting. Like many artists, I too, am terribly conflicted.

Admittedly, I have been sizing up eBook readers for quite some time. From the time of it’s release, I had been vigilently keeping my eye on The Amazon Kindle, yet I couldn’t bring myself to buy it. Why did the release of nook™ by Barnes and Noble catch my eye? Simply put, the color touch screen on the bottom. One of the things I love most about books are the cover designs, and the rainbows built but colorful spines. Additionally, the eReader format being available for PC AND Mac tipped the scale in the nook’s favor. At the time of purchase, Amazon did not have a Mac-compatible eReader for Kindle boooks (which has since been remedied). Despite the buzz of Apple’s iPad (and its release meer weeks after my purchase), I selected the nook™ as my eReader. I do not regret this as the electronic ink is easier on my eyes, and when held I find the iPod a bit heavier than I would like.

Valdís loves R Canepa & his new novel ‘Norton’s Ghost’.

Avoiding Multi-distracting
My ability to multi-task and get the job done is something I pride myself upon. However, I have noticed that despite accomplishing my goals, I feel less of an investment in what I am doing. For some things like housekeeping, laundry, and cooking, this is a blessing, but it can be counterproductive on things demanding full attention such as studying, writing, and to an extent reading.

Keeping that in mind, I am hesitant to invest in an iPad. I already have a computer, a netbook, and a school issued laptop, so I have trouble justifying the purchase of the shiniest new Apple in the orchard. With the purchase of my nook, I promised myself that I would not only enjoy reading again, but that I would avoid things that detract from my enjoyment of it. As a resuly, I have been reading outside of my apartment, far away from my television, mobile phone, and every other possible distraction. An added bonus is that I have been going outside in the sunshine and taking in the world around me without my customized soundtrack. I could select one, if I so choose to, but finding the right mix is essential.

To compete with the iPad, nook has the capability of playing music and, more recently, playing games. Though I appreciate the option of having a little background music, I find the game availabilty unnecessary. Maybe I am just bitter because I am horrible at both Chess and Sudoku. Though, if Solitare or Mindsweeper became available, I may start singing a different tune. I haven’t gotten the hang of the Web browser (beta), but I would prefer not doing so because it may become one more thing to distract me from my reading.

Yummy Tidbits for Thought
‘The Daily’ section provides short articles, including pieces by Dave Barry, Stephen King’s ‘DayBook’, and one’s daily dose of humor. Reminiscent of reading a magazine digest, or blog, the articles cover a wide range of topics, some ficticious and others not. The pieces written by King are my favorite, followed by the chunks of humor from the ‘Grin & Tonic’ section at a close second. To further this feature, I take my nook to my local B&N and stock up on the ‘In Store’ exclusive content, or get a taste of what’s to come in a book that I am uncertain about purchasing. With a daily in- store limit of an hour of free reading time, it is still sufficient enough to make a dent in any book. I test drove this on Seth Grahame-Smith’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. Naturally, my hour ran out just when it got to the key narrative hook, so I am hooked now.

When I find books in the shop I am interested in reading, I chase the titles up on my nook. I love that I can add the titles to my wishlist, but of course I am disappointed that many of the titles I am interested in are not yet available (or may not become available) in electronic format. Additionally, one thing B&N lacks (and Amazon has a leg up on), is the ‘tell the publisher’ option to request a printed book in e-format (or in this case Kindle format). This option alone made me waffle between selecting the Kindle over the nook.

Dressing to Impress
When it comes to accessorizing, the devil is in the details. Without a backlit screen, an additional clip on light may become necessary when reading without an overhead light source. The nook unit comes without a protective covering, so I succumbed to my impulses and dressed Valdís up a bit.

I selected the G.K. Chesterton Quote in (soft Italian milled synthetic leather) Coffee (Brown) as my semi-hard cover. Boasting “Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity” seemed a bit pretentious, but as an aspiring fiction writer, it seemed to be the logical statement to make. The interior cover has three pockets, two of which are perfect for gift cards or memo squares. The larger third could accommodate coupons or a small note pad. Though the wannabe fashionista is pushing for the kate spade new york nook covers, I don’t forsee my wallet coughing up the cash for them any time soon.

I elected to swap out my nook’s standard gray rear cover for the grapefruit pink one. As I purchased my nook in the spring, it seemed to be the perfect color that was ‘not blue’. Personally, I would like to campaign for a purple rear cover, something bright and happy (and preferably not lavendar). In the mean time, I may jaunt over to Etsy, and pick up one of the gorgeous handmade eBook Reader covers available, if I feel the need to make my nook a little more personalized. Well, that is until I can design and sew my own.

Currently, the two items I would like most to complete my eReading experience, a microSD card and a clip on light. The bottom line, everything else can wait while I get reading!

In November 2007, I bought a Mac Mini while I was living in Japan. I had been pushing myself for years to switch from Windows to Mac, and at the time, the availability of an English OS computer in Japan was extremely convenient.

Compact. Powerful. Inexpensive.

This fall will mark the third anniversary of my conversion to The Orchard. However, I recently have had doubts about my selection of my Mac Mini. Allow me to clarify. Being a novice to Apple, I am uncertain if I selected the right device to meet my computing needs. At the time, I was extremely confident and satisfied with my purchase. It met my needs, both in the computing and spatial, when I lived in a single room apartment in Japan.

Now, that I am back in the U.S.A., the land of bigger, better, fast, more, I feel like the kid who showed up to school without doing their homework. Truth be told, I have wanted a MacBook ever since my gal pal, Leanne showed me her PowerBook (now MacBookPro) in 2004. Unfortunately, the price tag has always been a point of contention for me. Since then, most of my friends and my sister have all switched, and despite my love for little Valhöll, I feel like an adulterous sneak.

Orchard Pimps

I skulk over to Apple or drop by my local retailer, and leer at all the shinier, sleeker, sexier technology. My fingers linger on keyboards. My eyes gaze upon displays. The gears in my head start crunching numbers. Their pimps walk over, eager to find the right one to meet my needs. Then, I see the Mac Minis, remember my girl back home, and I suddenly feel dirty. I shouldn’t seek to replace her, but rather find the means to maximize her potential. Like a treacherous lover, I take a last look before turning away and returning home (with my wallet in tact).

My lack of techno-savvy propagates this vicious circle. I don’t know how to add memory. I can’t figure out which peripherals will optimize my user interface. I have no clue which programs are the most worthwhile investment for my OS. I drown in all the jargon used in magazines and blogs, but my pride inhibits my whims to break down and buy an ‘Idiot’s’ or ‘Dummies’ Guide. Long story short, this is my cry for help.

Many of the reviews I’ve read about Mac Mini seldom sing it’s praises. Naturally, this makes me question my investment. I see many online communities discussing modifications and upgrades, but as a novice user, finding the courage to join them is nonexistent. On this topic, I am a grade A, USDA Approved chicken. As a perfectionist, I get easily frustrated when I can’t figure something out, and the overflow of information on the internet only exacerbates it. The easy out would be to back up my files, drop the cash on something else and kick Valhöll to the curb like yesterday’s rubbish. Yet, I can’t bring myself to do it.

As a dual-OS user, I forsake brand loyalty for compatibility. Usually, I would defect to my beloved Best Buy, but many members of the ‘Geek Squad’ I’ve met cringe when questions about Macs come into play. I feel that despite the installation of miniature orchards among the Windows, I don’t trust the knowledge base of those outside the Apple Stores. I would like to discuss my expansion options with an Apple expert, but I don’t want to be pressured into buying new technology. I want suggestions on how to improve what I have, and my wallet would agree.

Currently, I cannot justify the purchase of a MacBook, iMac or Apple Cinematic Display. The connection ports required for the cinematic displays are not compatible with the older Mac Minis, and I couldn’t find any conversion cables or adapters either. The $900.00 price tag also blows my mind. For a third of that, I could easily buy a 23″ monitor by HP, that could also be connected to my HP Mini Studio Tord Boontje netbook.

“I mean, she was right there, and I didn’t think you’d find out. Oh Baby, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean it. I swear, it’s the last time.”

This conversation plays out each time I walk in the door, after I return from the the scene of my crimes. Consumed by guilt, but unable to curb my wandering eyes, I continue looking at the menu without ordering anything.

I’ve been thinking about rewards for my journey from Shetland Pony to Mustang Sally. Treating myself to things that would be counter productive to my progress are not permitted. As much as I would love to have a gorgeous dinner at Cheesecake Factory, I think items to keep my motivation would be more suitable.

Running Mates

Nike+ SportBand in Natural Gray/Pink Flash (#WM0057-64; $59.00) and/or Nike+ iPod Watch Remote ($69.00). The SportBand comes with an additional sensor, and up to eight different sensors can be synched with it. This would be useful if I want to go for a walk/jog with a friend or if I want to go for a walk in the city and take in the sights and sounds without a personal soundtrack. When I travel and want to conserve my iPod battery, this could be a great way to record my walks. For times when I am jamming out to my iPod, a way to check progress or change music without craning my neck to read my armband would be ideal. Plus, the clear overlay on the armband I have makes the touch wheel less responsive. The variety between workout options would give a little spice and keep things fresh.

Though a long while off, I am looking forward to the arrival of spring. There are lots of parks and nature areas in Westchester, and I am looking forward to feeling the difference between road running and trail hiking. I don’t know how quickly I’ll adapt to the change in paths, but it would be nice to go for some nature walks and visit places that aren’t in the immediate vicinity. I should be a smart cookie and scour the shoe racks at Nordstrom Rack or DSW, but I want to be selfish and treat myself to a pair of Nike Air Pegasus+ 26 iD GTX (size 8; $135.00) Trail Runners (I’m quite partial to the turquoise/ yellow/ black design). Like my current pair of Nike+, these also utilize the iPod technology with a space in the sole of the sneaker for the running sensor. Each shoe is customizable with up to six characters each, but the hardest part is figuring out what to write on them. I was thinking of having ‘SHTLND’ on one and ‘MUSTNG’ on the other in memory of this mission, but I wonder if that is too cheesy…

Currently, I am running with pocketed sweatshirts, so I am able to store my bulky keys easily, however, once the weather starts to warm up and dropping layers will become necessary, I need a better way of transporting my keys. Generally, I don’t take my phone with me, but in the event of an emergency I may need the numbers of someone to call (or worst case scenario to be called). Road ID® Shoe Pouch ID in Black ($19.99). I should also carry a form of photo identification and my insurance card copy in the event of an emergency, but I don’t have the pocket space for them.

Swimming With the Fishes

I’ve been kicking around the idea of swimming laps with my iPod, but I am concerned about the safety of my little Code(RED) Generation 3 iPod. However, I would like to purchase the necessary accesories to do so before they get yanked off the market. The iN3 Waterproof Case for iPod nano (3G; $79.99) and Waterproof Heaphones ($49.99-$99.99)by H2O seem to have rather positive reviews. Though dropping money on a smaller, less expensive iPod Shuffle and a swim kit seems to the be safer bet, it’s also the more costly. I would need to figure out a place to swim laps that wouldn’t require my swimming with the school swim team (or at least until I have a body I don’t mind them seeing in a swimsuit). I don’t plan on worrying about this until it warms up here. Though the pools are mose likely heated, I don’t want to feel insecure about what I am wearing and who sees me in the mean time.

Like the Nike+ hardware, I am hoping that these items would motivate me to regain the swimming skills I used to have. As a teenager, I could swim the 100m backstroke or the 100m free-style constinually without problems. I wasn’t particularly fast, but I could swim steadily without stopping. Last summer, I did water aerobics with my mom and enjoyed it thoroughly. However, cranking my music didn’t particularly agree with my father’s music tastes. This would help keep the peace and rock out in the water when I am at home visiting the parents.

I’ve been eyeing these items for a couple of years now (pretty much from the time I purchased my iPod), but it’s taken this long for me to finally decide to make the purchase. I don’t know if there is an online monitoring/coaching community like Nike+ has, but I would like to find something that I can help record my progress.

I’d be curious to know which tools, applications, equipemt, or methods people use to track their fitness journeys.

As I sip my Dunkin’ Donuts Hazelnut coffee from a rather kitsch Mile 0: Key West mug, I feel inspired. No, inspired isn’t the right word for it. Invigorated would be a better word for it. After a recent visit to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, I feel like the mission control room leader– pacing about and overseeing the various technicians at their stations. I’m preparing for lift-off in Five…

Four…

Three…

Two…

One…

Zero…

Technologically speaking, I am going on a diet. At thirty (point) five, I am embarking upon a mission of epic proportions. I am doing this not only for myself, but for my lovely partners in crime, namely my MacMini, Turbo Sunshine. At the moment, my productivity and organization levels are plodding about like a little, angry Shetland Pony left by itself at a medieval fair. She can’t even give rides to little kids. She just stays tied up at the fence all alone, eating grass, and muttering to the world how much her station in life feels stagnant. My goal for this little pony is to transform into a sleek, speedy mare. I want her to tromp around, frolic, and race. She needs to not only rundown her opponent in the joust, but go the distance as well. From today, I am embarking upon the Shetland Pony-Mustang Karen (Shetland-Mustang) Mission into creative outer space. Streamlining, organizing, and healthy habits are necessary keys for success.

Phase I: Getting Organized - The desire of instant gratification always makes this process so frustrating. I always want to short cut or circumvent this process completely. My muse wants to get down and dirty, but I find her struggling to get anything accomplished in the chaos that is my workstation.

Stage One: Web Presence - For the time being, I have given up on multiple blogs and attempting to generate web content. My malnourished B/net ChangeLog has become the mainstay of my public web presence. LiveJournal is used for my more private thoughts, and is limited to close friends and family only. Throughout the past ten plus years, I have attempted and failed on multiple occasions to build and maintain an effective website. When reviewing blogs and sites of my friends, the inner competitor gets fired up. However, after a few vain attempts, I have regrettably thrown in the towel time and time again. Until I can develop a concept worth generating consistent web content, I decided to put a stop order on my multiple futile attempts.

Stage Two: Productivity Tools – Since the purchase of my MacMini, I have ventured away from MicroSoft Office and NeoOffice, and gravitated toward using Scrivener as a means of organizing my writing projects. Though I began ‘the Switch’ in November 2007, I still have yet to fully complete the process. Two factors (and large excuses) contributing to this are 1) my employers consistently use PCs, so I am constant jumping between the two formats, and 2) my parents’ have two computers in the house, neither of which are Apple machines. So as to bridge the gap between my Mac and the PCs in my life, I’ve been resorting to the package of platforms generated by Google (Blogger, Calendar, Gmail, and Wave to name a few). My Mini doesn’t lend to easy transport like a flash drive, so under the guise of convenience, I have been working double time without much success.

My Mini comes with plenty of programs which go unused for long periods of time (or maintain their virginity because I am too chicken to tackle them). The sloth in me nags time and time again to purchase the MicroSoft Office Suite for Mac, so I can maximize my productivity when working. My employer has provided me with a laptop, so I have no real reason to justify the purchase any longer. I can do the work on my work laptop and leave my precious Apple for personal use. So as to foster a healthier lifestyle, a separation between church (personal) and state (professional) are necessary. Before I make the purchase of new software, I need to categorize the purchase and evaluate if it is truly necessary (or if I am seeking out something easier).

Mountains of paper also stand between me and organizational bliss. Some of my missing electronic files have paper counterparts, but as to their location— the closest I have is ‘in a box somewhere in my parents’ attic.’ I need an awesome scanner that can get the job done with minimal frustration, so I can put the papers in the recycle bin, but have the information stored. This is one my larger projects and obstacles that has prevented me from applying for any form of creative orientated graduate programs. My undergrad papers and projects magically disappeared from my PC which I left behind in Florida while I was in Japan.

Stage Three: File Management – Transitioning between Stages Two and Three may prove to be the most arduous of tasks. With using two platforms, I have multiple files of the same documents, but in different formats. Many of these files are simply taking up disk space, as I no need for them at the time being. Additionally, I do not have hard copies of many of my older files which could problematic as I am currently having a hard disk situation with my 1Tb external hard drive. I need to find ways to access information, but the archival process is one I am truly dreading. I using Scrivener for setting up my multiple (incomplete) writing projects, but I am going to use it to create a more condensed version of other materials and documents. I have an obsession with the ‘create new folder’ function on both PC and Mac that I have far too many folders, leading to too many places for Finder to hunt through when I actually need to find something. The Stage Three team has decided that copies of the information will be collected in Scriv files, but the original documents will be saved to data disk and removed for external storage.

My inner five year old is adamantly protesting this process as if it were a plate of brussel sprouts. I’m not letting her leave the table this time. She’s wriggled her way out of it multiple times, but I just can’t stand it any longer. We’re going to stay seated at the table until every last byte is finished.

Stage Four: Time Management – I love calendars. I love color coding and labeling. I love colored markers, pens, and highlighters. I love making To Do Lists. However, sometimes I think I love the process of creating this things as opposed to actually handling the tasks at hand. I am searching for the same passion and energy in task execution that I posses when I am planning. This is certain one of the many things I need to work on and develop. My daytime and nighttime schedules are quite different, but I believe that it is necessary to organize both, so as to use my time effectively.

Phase II: Project Management - Once Phase I is complete, I believe I will be able to advance into the more difficult phase— the one where I will actually get work done. The work list has yet to be generated. The prioritization of said list must wait. Timelines will need to wait. These items need to hang out at the water cooler and keep themselves preoccupied while I get to work. I know that they are going to get restless and demand attention, but I cannot ignore the obstacles preventing me from getting my act together any longer. I do not know how long Phase I may take, but I am setting a preliminary deadline of March 8th (two months from today).

Houston, we have lift-off, and ‘failure is not an option.’

During an excited Tweetfest with my flock, Allyson suggested that I put my nervous energy about my new job to good use and start brainstorming design ideas for my new place in New York. For some reason, it seemed that the clouds parted and I was instantly enlightened as to the theme for my bathroom.

Asian Inspiration Turned Decoration
When I lived in Japan, I went to visit my pal Alex in Malaysia with my friend, Yuriko. We hit up some of the hottest tourist spots and I snapped up tons of photos like a good like globe trotter. Rifling through my library, I pulled a handful of images that just seemed to flawlessly complement one another. As my bathroom is a place where I do some of my best thinking, I figured defining my trifecta of serenity was essential: comfort, relaxation, and inspiration.

When I write my name in Japanese「華蓮」, the first character (“Ka”) means “flower”, and the second (“Ren”) means “lotus”. These are based upon the Chinese-style reading of the characters, as opposed to using the Japanese readings of the Chinese characters (「はな」＆「はす」). I have pictures of lotus flowers (and I love pink, green, and yellow), so I decided to lean to this palette for the bathroom. Before I left for Japan, I had a cherry blossom motif in my loo, but my refuse to copycat my gal pal Alison’s creativity.

The staple of the wall decor will be print outs of these photographs, but depending on wall space, I would like to add addition art by artists I have spotted on DeviantArt. Here are a couple that caught my eyes:

“Water Lily” by AcidLullaby

“Lotus Princess” by Starlight-Usagi

“Princess Lotus” by Marumiyan

“Lotus Pond” & “Lotus” by Hiliuyun

My concern is that I might end up overloading the walls with pictures. There were countless close up photographs of lotus flowers, all of which looked better than the photos I took. Also, I am wondering if digital and drawn art would clash with the photographs. I am quite certain that painting the walls will be out of the question, so I am looking for ways to brighten up the walls without doing anything permanent.

Once I resume learning Japanese calligraphy, I would like to make a piece that resembles this one, complete with gorgeous brushstrokes, precise balance, and natural elegance. This will be a nice project to work on after I am settled in my new place. I’ll have plenty of time to practice, but I have a hunch it may take a while before I generate a piece I am comfortable displaying on my walls. I hope that I will be able to seek assistance from the art instructor or my neighbors on perfecting the perfect piece.

Ambiance, Shower Power & Counter Toppings
After watching excessive hours of HGTV, I am determined to have a fabulously accessorized diva lair. During my relaxing (and regularly scheduled), end-of-the-week soaks, I want to kick off the regular light and enjoy the soft glow of a koi printed paper lantern. Candles would be a lovely addition to this, however, I have an inkling that they may be verboten. Though this koi & water lily toilet seat could spell overkill, I think it would be a funky, final addition to the Throne of the Enlightened.

The sunny yellow transitioning to aquamarine of this flamenco shower curtain really makes me want to get up and boogie down in the shower. It reminds me of the yellow sun and the cool water, like looking at a lily pond in the early morning. To keep the ruffles in shape, I want to add this bamboo vinyl shower curtain as a liner on the inside, and fastening them together with these orchid & narcissus shower hooks. Matching the ruffly shower curtain could be good fun. I found these vivid colored towels , but the issue is selecting colors. I am torn between buttercup, honeydew, flamingo, or hibiscus. Should I mix and match or just select a single color? A reversible bath mat in one of these colors may be a smart idea, too.

Bringing a little woodsy flavor to the bath, I’d like to line the tub with an
orbz amber shower mat so as to prevent slipping in the shower, and this solid teak shower mat outside to towel off on. The spa salon effect can be enhanced with the matching shower caddy to keep me organized and my shower goods in a handy location (and preventing crowded tub corners). Depending on counter space, this teak folding shower bench may come in handy when getting ready for a night out (or just a place to keep items off the floor).

Depending on the availability of counter space, I may have to juggle my ever growing list of decor.
For a dash of color, this pink lotus soaps with ceramic lily pad set is adorable, as are these cherry almond soaps and this stunning lotus soap & body butter set. Fear not. I will have soap that one could actually use in the bathroom, despite my love for decorative, scented soaps. Kamini lotus bar soap in a cute bamboo soap dish from this bamboo slat bath ensemble is what I have in mind. I’ll admit hesitation about ordering soaps and lotions online without being able to waft, whiff, and sniff to my heart’s content beforehand. I am a consummate fan of testers and samples, so I can make an informed decision.

Online boutiques and nifty blogs have really helped me collect my thoughts on planning for my new place. I am working on mapping out ideas for my living room, kitchen, and bedroom. Granted all these plans could be promptly discarded upon setting my eyes upon my new place, but I am enjoying the chance to play mini-Design Star. Stay tuned for the next project!

Last week, I started taking a digital photography with PhotoShop Elements course at the community school. Right out of the gates, I felt I was at a technological disadvantage as I have a point-and-shooter while the majority of my peers are hefting pricey single lens reflex (SLR) cameras. Though, my handy dandy Panasonic Lumix DMC FX-07 has been undoubtedly fantastic to me, I can’t help but wonder if I am truly at a disadvantage with my current hardware. I am one of the many denizens who follow Geek*Sugar on the Sugar Network. Being less techno-savvy, I value and respect her ability to mainline the pros and cons of tech stuff for her audience without drowning us in jargon.

Intentionally Lo-Fi? Enter Lomography!

When I was living in Tottori, I frequented some of the little shops along the main shopping drags in Tottori City and Yonago City. There was Chambre Ample inTottori City and Johnny Appleseed in Yonago. Both focused on kitsch accessories, home interior goods, and clothes. They have a diverse of “European” goods, namely higher end stationery and trinkets. Among the lush kitsch jungle of shabby-chic, I discovered the assortment of Lomo cameras, especially the FishEye and SuperSampler. Though I never had the courage to actually march up the counter with one, I find them truly fascinating.

I bought my first digital camera prior to my move to Japan in 2003. During university, I frequented the photo labs at Wal-mart and Publix until a peer introduced me to a “proper photography shop” near 34th Street and University Drive. I loved how this particular shop did matte prints with white photography borders. It was hard for me to part with my old 35mm camera. I found it in a box the other day, untouched for almost six years with film still in it. For some reason, I opted to leave the film in it. Now that I have been a digital girl for nearly six years, I have almost a fear of returning to ‘lower’ machine.

It is really a ‘lower machine’? Gosh, that sounds completely opposite of what I mean. Perhaps, I’ve gotten too comfy with how good digital photography makes me appear creatively. No need to worry about f-stops, ISO, shutter speeds, lenses and all the adjustments necessary to make to make the pictures happen. My point-and-shoot has to an extent, made me lazy about the photographic process. It doesn’t require as much thought as I thought– or so I thought. Through the course, I’ve learned that I know very little about the little gadget which responsible for recording my exploits abroad since 2003.

Technologically speaking, Japan is a bit more ahead of the game than the US, hence we import their electronics from cameras and gaming systems to televisions and automobiles. Bigger. Faster. Stronger. How much bang can I get for my buck, yen, (insert currency here)… Whenever I finally hunker down and make an investment in an electronic appliance or device, without fail the newer generation pops out within a few months of purchase. The phrase “its not what you have but how you use it,” has been cycling through my mind as I write this. People apply it to countless things: cars, houses, electronics, an individual’s ‘performance’. There has been a long running (pardon my crass language) pissing contest to see whose going to emerge the top.

I hate to admit it, but I think that my reservations of purchasing a lomo or ‘traditional’ camera, stem for my insecurities as a photographer. I’ve seen the amazing work people generate though the bragging rights don’t come without a hefty price tag. As a novice photography this can be quite daunting to the point that I feel I should just slip my P-n-S in my pocket and just shuffle on home. Perhaps I am searching in the wrong communities, but I just don’t know where to look. I would love to learn from the elite, but I get the nagging sensation that my ‘greenness’ isn’t eco-friendly in their high art environment.

So why should I try to compete? Would my inexperience be met with the same raised brows, patronizing commentary, and jargon filled conversations if I straddled the fence and just picked up a lomo to satisfy my curiosity? Would I be breaking some unspoken rule or “us versus them” mentality of the purists on either side? Shouldn’t it be just about the pictures? Am I over thinking the entire situation and depriving myself of a potentially entertain medium to work with?

This year is the 25th Anniversary of Lomo, Though the shiny silver and chrome editions are quite shiny, my eyes have been drawn to the Diana F+ Clones: Mr. Pink, Tokyo Rising, and The Diana F+ Deluxe Kit. Their shop has so many different things to choose from. With a digital camera, these lenses are ridiculously expensive or non-existent. Many of the photographic options can be mimicked in PhotoShop, but would detract from the playful experience of these cameras. Wouldn’t it?

Mixed Media Alert! PSE 6 Conflict

Now, this conflict could be partially circumvented using my computer, a tablet, and a program like PhotoShop Elements. I previously used PhotoShop on my retired Sony Viao and finally got the hang of it after a while. Though I worked hard at tweeking my works in a ‘digital darkroom’ many pretentious artists and non-constructive critics in online art communities discount digital photography as genuine art as problematic items can be ‘photoshopped away’. I disagree with this, largely in part to the amount of work and finesse is necessary to make the work presentable for display.

In my final year at university, I studied the impact of electronic writing spaces had on creative writing as an independent study. Prior to this, I took a course focusing on Creative Writing Online, and another about Women and the World Wide Web. Both classes explored the pros and cons of computers and the internet as it pertained to the writer which completely fascinated me. I think photographers, digital and analog alike, are posed with similar conflicts.

I have many questions. Possibly too many…

Does digital photo manipulation carry the same artistic weight as manual composition or composite lomography? Which artists receive more credibility as photographers or artists?

Is it better to relinquish creative control and allow the device (lens, film, filter, etc) to take some creative license? Or should an artist keep their reins tight and maintain control without waiting for ’surprises’?

Should paying for films and developing weight heavy on the decision to invest, or with the ability to get digital records (CD-R) not prevent the opportunity as additional manipulations could be done later without the need for a photo lab?

Would it be a worthwhile investment in a lomo camera if only for the fun of going to back to one’s roots with uncomplicated photography which requires greater creative imagination?

I’ll stop the thought train for now. Its late and I want to do thinking that doesn’t require staring at a screen. Don’t think I am not thinking up follow-up questions. I am most certain that I will have more

Many of my friends have skills or talents they are gung ho or mastering. Whether its a martial art (several black belt holders in my social circle), a creative talent, or being totally craft-tastic (Knit-Wits, Holla!!), everyone has something they are bananas about. Despite my Virgo nature, I tend to dabble in a little bit of everything without truly mastering anything. It’s a bit frustrating really.

Does this make me a consummate niche seeker? Am I experimenting with my free-time? Could a need for variety be the driving force behind my commitment issues with hobbies and sports?

Sports: Unleashing the Inner Tomboy

When I was in high school, I lived and breathed volleyball for two years. I loved it, despite thebehind-the-scenes-team drama. I would have played through my senior year had I not injured myself at a cheerleading picnic (in a vain attempt to fit in). My coach never really forgave me for separating my ankle on a trampoline. I ended up quitting the team after my sophomore year because the pain and weakness of the ankle frustrated me more than losing nearly every single game. Part of me wonders if I should have gone to physical therapy once the cast came off. The doctor said it wasn’t necessary, and since he didn’t force the issue, I didn’t give it a second thought. However, even now I wear an ankle brace when I play sports because on cold & rainy days, I still get stiffness in the joint. I am thankful that it didn’t need to be surgically drained, but I wonder if I did enough for it to heal correctly.

For three years, I played tennis in Japan with my colleagues. Every Sunday night, we’d meet up for a couple of hours of smashing double fun. I loved it. I got to hang out with my friends and play a sport. It was the most exercise I got on a regular basis since high school Gradually, I improved, though I remained one of the weaker membersof the team. Playing tennis with my friends became a routine, one I earnstly looked forward to. Now that I am back in Florida, I need to actively seek novice players looking for a partner or with space on their team. Being slightly overweight, limits my ability to play full sets without wanting to drop dead, so I need to find a healthy way to get in shape– and eventually be able to wear a tennis skirt with confidence.

Queen of the Kitchen! Maybe some day…

Upon returning home, I quickly became re-addicted to reality TV programs like Ace of Cakes and TOP CHEF: NY. Being an individual who severely lacks in the culinary department, I live vicariously through the talented dynamos on these programs. After struggling with a single burner kitchenette for 5.5 years in Japan, I have lost what little command of cusine I previously had. Every now and then, I am attempting recipes my mom’s left for me in the house with very little success. I’ve contemplated culinary school, but my lack of style in the kitchen greatly stunts that endeavour.

However, I picked up a flyer from Joann Fabrics and Crafts last week during their open house. They have a series of cake decorating classes starting up in April & May. I am heavily considering the Wilton(c) Cake courses as something to help me gain a little confidence in the kitchen and keep me from becoming a total hermit. If I can’t get a full-time job right away, perhaps I could at least work in a bakery to make some money. I love cake and want to make pretty ones!

Getting Literary, Baby!

I am attempting to climb back on the writing horse, especially with several failed attempts at NaNoWriMo and the impending doom that is Script Frenzy next month. Last night, I was given my first writing timed challenge in years. After hashing out Noor Jawahir a bit last month, I came screeching to a halt. What I desperately need in regards to my writing is structure, a task master, and most importantly deadlines. The writing project on the table is Faviarti’s Tarot, one of my many incomplete NaNoWriMo stories. It’s a modern high fantasy that needs to be heavily planned out and researched, especially since there are references to majicks, tarot cards, and other magical things.

I have considered finding a writers’ group here or taking a course at the community college, but I often worry as most self-proclaimed writers have a tendency to be pretentious. After wasting years on GaiaOnline, I got burnt out on narcissistic prima donnas, drama llamas, and immature prats who consistently bitched and moaned about other people’s writing. There was little respect for creative identity, especially with the veil of anonymity. The destructive criticism dole out left and right proved to stifle my writing and stunted my confidence as a writer. Everyone had something to say, and without the pressure of face-to-face interaction, many harsh comments were made. I’m not saying that all writers on GO are horrible, bitter hermits out to exact revenge on others because they haev chips on their shoulders. It’s more of one or two rotten apples spoils the entire bushel. I made some great friends on GO, but for the most part the electronic interaction was merely that.

Real Life = Obstacle = Not an Excuse to too many people. It drove me away, and impacted my desire to write. I want to shake the dust off my writing and get back into it full swing.

After a year or so of fawning over the PSPs in just about every electronics store I happened upon, I caved and bought one. The latest generation (PSP-3000 in Pearl White). Though I really pined over the pastel colored ones, I figured if I am going to shell out the money for them, I might as well get my money’s worth.

Since Christmas Day (12/25/08) better known as the day Karen resumed hermit-hood, I have had been glued to the darn thing playing until my thumbs lose feeling. When I was a child, the boys in my neighborhood coined it as “Nintendo Numbness” because that was the only game system in my household at the time. I swear, somewhere in this body of mine there is a 14 year old Japanese fan boy chained up, but trying to claw his way out. The shiny new PSPs were on display beside the latest game releases by ‘SquEnix’, including Final Fantasy Dissidia (the ultimate FF Manics dream complete with all the heroes and main villians as playable characters). FFD won’t be available in the US until mid-2009, so I caved and bought the Japanese version as– It. Was. Right. There.

I really shouldn’t be allowed to step foot into an electronic store unattended, or able to contact any of “enablers”.

I’ve been really impressed by the lighter weight of the 3000 series PSP. Having a bag full of junk to schlep around all the time often prevented me from purchasing the Sony hand-held gaming device. I have a clear, (removable) plastic casing to keep all those pesky chips and fingerprints off my new Precioussss….

As for FFD, I haven’t figured out how to do any of the really fancy moves, nor have I figured out how to do the play against your friend option. With the DS, one’s friend didn’t need to have the game, but I am thinking that for the PSP, both players may need to have a copy.

Other games purchased: Itadaki Street! Dragon Quest vs. Final Fantasy, The Goddess of Jokes, I’ll Never Forgive You, and Suzumiya Haruhi’s Promise. I have been told that the UMD Disks play in all systems, much like the Nintendo DS games, however, I don’t know if this is true. I’ll need to chase up some of my friends back home and see if any of them are “in possession” of the goods and if we can arrange a trail deal.

The first one’s always free, right?

Good grief, it’s been nearly a year since I posted here @b.net. So many things have
happened, that I don’t even know where to possibly start.

*NEWS FLASH*

After 5.5 Years, I am parting ways with Japan for a while. My transition from public servant to corporate employee did not go as smooth as I had hoped, and living in Tokyo was far more expensive than I had anticipated. I’m emotionally exhausted, so I decided I need to pull the plug on my Tokyo adventure for the time being and return to the Sunshine State which I call home.

Internet/Blog: After failed attempts at maintaining a personal homepage (lack of programming knowledge made this rather frustrating), I decided to open a blog at site called “Team Sugar“– its a large community for women with tons of themes and discussion forums (don’t worry, men can join, too). If you join (or already have an account), chase me up under “karenpanna”

Sunshiney Side Up! is the name of my new blog. Its objective is to map the return to Florida as well as my re-adjustment into American society. At the moment, my main priorities are getting home in a safe and efficient manner, but not wasting too much time bumming around the house. I am looking for projects to keep my busy as well as ways to clear my debt and eventually jump start a new career.

Creative Projects: All are on-hold until I get home in January. I’ve been kicking around ideas for my current projects, and if I can get anything decent together, possibly enter some writing contests.

I look forward to being “back home” in Florida, especially since January in Miami is considerably warmer than that of Tokyo. I hope I can see my friends quickly upon returning home. I need hugs…. lots of hugs.
